WORLD WAR II
LANGUAGE SCHOOL
THE BEGINNING OF CU BOULDER
Our first building, Old Main, was funded with
generous donations from the community and
built on land grants from local residents. The
land originally was the territory of the Ute,
Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples.

The U.S. Navy Japanese Language School
moved from Berkeley to Boulder, where
interpreters and translators
acquired language skills
that served the United
States during the war.

GENDER EQUALITY
ADVOCATES
The hiring of Mary Rippon, the
first woman to teach at a state
university, demonstrated our state
constitutional charge to educate
men and women equally.
CONFERENCE ON
WORLD AFFAIRS
For more than 75 years, the conference
has featured campus visits by
distinguished people, including former
first lady Eleanor Roosevelt in 1955.
